The New York State Health Commissioner, Howard Zucker, recently came out in support of legalizing marijuana in the state. The legalization of marijuana in the United States would accomplish little more than bringing about the birth of the next Big Tobacco. New York doesn’t need to another addiction-for-profit industry placing profits ahead of public health.

Write to the Governor and Health Commissioner today to urge them to stand with the thousands of public health officials, doctors, recovery professionals and people in recovery who are opposed to marijuana legalization and commercialization.

With the marijuana industry spending millions of dollars to belittle and drown out the voices of the opposition, it is imperative that your voice is heard in this debate.

Dear Governor,

I am writing you today to urge you to oppose the legalization and commercialization of marijuana in our state.

As reported, the Department of Health will release a report recommending legalizing and commercializing marijuana in the state of New York.

Public health data from states that have legalized marijuana strongly indicate that we should be pumping the brakes on legalization: we have seen increased drugged-driving fatalities, increased emergency room visits and poison control calls, and increased worker accidents and absenteeism.

A cost study in our neighboring state of Connecticut found that that the costs of legalization exceeded the projected revenues by 90%.

Now is exactly the wrong time to commercialize marijuana in our state. Legalization in other states has been a failed experiment, let’s not repeat their mistakes.
